Police are currently examining a complaint regarding Reform UK’s initiative to cover the energy bills of an entire street for a year.

As part of a prize draw event, Nigel Farage and Treasury representative Robert Jenrick presented a bouquet of flowers and a significant cheque worth £1,758 to a couple believed to be supporters of Reform UK in Wigan. Allegations arose on social media suggesting that Mr. Farage was acquainted with the couple, with a photo surfacing from a 2019 Brexit Party event showing him standing behind them. Last month, Reform staged a promotional stunt at a petrol station in Derbyshire by reducing fuel prices to highlight their commitment to cutting fuel duty.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed that they have received a report and are currently evaluating the situation. The review does not signify the commencement of an investigation, and the specific potential offense under scrutiny remains unclear.

Reform UK stated that the prize draw had received approval from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Participants were required to disclose their personal details, voting history, and future voting intentions to enter the competition.

An ICO representative emphasized the importance of political parties adhering to data protection regulations when collecting personal information for campaigning purposes. The ICO has engaged with Reform UK regarding the competition to enhance transparency in handling individuals’ personal data.

Mr. Farage dismissed concerns about potential electoral rule violations stemming from the stunt, stating that he is not worried. Party sources indicated that numerous members participated in the draw, and a supporter winning was not unexpected. Video evidence of the randomized draw was recorded for legal purposes, and the draw was open to both members and non-members.

The Electoral Commission highlighted that certain activities aimed at influencing voter behavior could constitute offenses, such as bribery and treating. It is the responsibility of the police to assess any allegations and determine if an offense has been committed.

A spokesperson for Reform UK expressed confidence that their actions align with electoral laws and regulations.
