Madonna, the renowned queen of pop music, is set to make a grand return to claim her throne. Surpassing all other artists, Madonna has secured an impressive 11 nominations for the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. Notably, this marks the third time in her illustrious career that she has emerged as the most nominated artist at the VMAs.
The nominations, which include coveted categories like artist of the year and video of the year, are in recognition of Madonna’s highly successful album, “Confessions II,” along with its accompanying film. Despite facing tough competition, Madonna outshone artists like Taylor Swift, who holds the record for the most solo artist wins in VMA history, by earning nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.” Following Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande trailed closely with seven nominations each.
This isn’t the first time Madonna has dominated the VMAs nominations. In 1990 and 1998, she led the pack with her iconic “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. However, Madonna’s unforgettable performance at the inaugural 1984 ceremony, where she provocatively sang “Like a Virgin” in a wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt buckle, remains etched in VMA history as a groundbreaking moment that pushed the boundaries of cable television.
Among Madonna’s nominations this year are video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” featuring fellow nominee Sabrina Carpenter. In the highly anticipated video of the year category, “Confessions” will be competing against Swift’s “Ophelia,” Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
To add to the excitement, this year’s VMAs feature 13 categories open for public voting. The winners will be revealed during the live broadcast of the ceremony on September 27, which will be aired on CBS, MTV, and streamed on Paramount+.
