Driving can often feel mundane, with long stretches of road and traffic jams being far from thrilling. However, every so often, a moment of serendipity occurs, where the road clears, the sun shines, and a picturesque landscape unfolds before you.

During a recent journey in March, I rented a car in Belfast and sought directions to Derry. Presented with two options by a staff member – a quicker motorway route or a longer scenic drive – I opted for the latter after a brief encounter with the dreary M2.

Embarking on the Causeway Coastal Route, spanning 120 miles from Belfast to Larne, I traversed through quaint villages, eventually reaching the delightful coastal town of Ballycastle. Not far off lies the renowned Giant’s Causeway, a must-see attraction along the way to Derry.

The route is dotted with captivating stops like Cranny Falls waterfall and Game of Thrones filming locations such as Mountain, Downhill Beach, and The Dark Hedges. Whitepark Bay offers a serene alternative to the bustling Causeway path, boasting one of the country’s most beautiful beaches.

Further along, attractions like Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and Fanad Lighthouse add to the allure of the journey. The road itself, crafted by William Bald in the 1800s, replaces the Old Irish Highway, offering a scenic and historic drive.

The anticipation of discovering hidden gems around each bend, from ancient castles to lush green hillsides and stunning coastal views, adds to the road’s enchantment. Recognized globally for its beauty, the Antrim coastline was lauded by CNN in 2019, ranking among the world’s top 16 scenic drives. Additionally, CNTraveller included the county on its list of top destinations to visit in 2026.

The allure of the Causeway Coastal Route transcends mere sightseeing, drawing travelers in with its blend of history, natural beauty, and captivating vistas.
