The recent national elections in Scotland and Wales, along with the local elections in England, have left our movement deeply disappointed.

Our first thoughts are with those who lost their seats, the candidates who stood for election, and the numerous members and activists who dedicated their efforts to the Party.

It is crucial to acknowledge the significant challenges that Britain is currently facing, from global conflicts and instability where Keir has demonstrated leadership, to the ongoing burden of rising living costs that affect people’s daily lives.

Simultaneously, there are individuals who aim to exploit grievances and sow division, as well as those who offer simplistic solutions to complex issues.

The Labour Party bears the responsibility of confronting these challenges directly: not only by presenting policies but also by offering a compelling and credible vision for the nation.

Various reactions will emerge from these election results. We firmly believe that the best course of action is to rally behind Keir Starmer’s leadership and heed the voices of the voters. Instead of dismissing their concerns, it is our duty to listen, learn, and respond.

Rather than turning inward, we must focus on outward engagement.

During its two-year tenure, the Labour Government enacted 60 bills that will bring about positive changes in communities and people’s lives. Soon, we will witness a King’s Speech outlining further steps that will have a lasting impact on our nation.

We understand that people are eager for change, and so are we. It is imperative that we improve our storytelling efforts.

Above all, we must concentrate on our plan for the country. Failure to do so would only empower our adversaries.

This is a moment for unity, not division.

David Evans, Iain McNicol, and Ray Collins, former General Secretaries of the Labour Party
