A skilled jockey narrowly escaped death when her pelvis was seriously injured by a falling horse. Sonja Logan, in 2023, was involved in a violent car theft attempt where assailants threw a brick through her car window and hit her face with a rock, causing severe injuries just weeks before her wedding.
Despite the attackers fleeing when the alarm was raised, they were never apprehended. Logan, pinned down by a half-ton racehorse named Jumping Power Two, described the excruciating pain as the most intense she had ever experienced in her life.
The incident occurred while Logan was riding Jumping Power Two, a horse trained by her husband, Tommy, who had been victorious in the last four races under her guidance. The horse was startled, causing it to rear up and subsequently fall on top of Logan, crushing her pelvis upon impact.
After being drugged for pain management and fitted with a pelvic brace, Logan was transported to Darwin Royal Hospital, then later transferred to Adelaide Royal Hospital for specialized treatment. Fortunately, she survived the ordeal with metal plates and screws inserted to stabilize her fractured pelvis.
Reflecting on the incident, Logan expressed that the pain she endured was unparalleled and likened it to a car crash impact. She acknowledged her luck in surviving the incident, as the horse’s weight landing on her pelvis prevented more severe injuries. Currently, Logan is recuperating at home with the aid of a walking frame, aiming to return to riding once she has fully healed.
Despite facing this traumatic event, Logan previously overcame a carjacking incident to continue her riding career, achieving success in competitions. However, she struggled with depression and alcohol abuse privately. To combat her mental health challenges, Logan turned to competitive bodybuilding and found solace in a supportive network, including her husband, Tommy, who has been instrumental in her recovery.
Grateful for the unwavering support she has received, Logan emphasized the difference in emotions between the horse-related accident and the previous assault she endured. She highlighted the innocence of the animal and credited her loved ones for their continuous assistance during her recovery journey.
