An investigation is being called for by the Southport inquiry report into an online retailer that sold a machete to Axel Rudakubana. The report highlighted concerns about the Hunting and Knives website’s promotion of knives in a manner deemed inappropriate and irresponsible, with references to their potential use as weapons. Rudakubana, posing as a 62-year-old, purchased a Congo Kukri machete from the site, exposing weak age verification procedures. The inquiry revealed that the machete was delivered without proper age checks, as the company failed to ensure compliance with legal age requirements for delivery. The report recommended a police-led investigation into possible criminal offenses by the company.

Tragically, Rudakubana, then 17 years old, used a knife bought on Amazon to fatally stab three young children at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class. The inquiry report criticized the inadequate enforcement of laws governing online marketing of knives and machetes, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations. It identified systemic failures across various agencies that could have prevented the attack, describing it as both foreseeable and preventable.

The report outlined key shortcomings, such as a lack of risk management, information sharing failures, and parental oversights. Recommendations included revising the process of purchasing weapons, especially online and by minors. Detailed accounts revealed how the killer circumvented age verification by providing false details during the purchase of knives. Although measures have since been improved, the report underscored the need for proactive steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Sir Adrian Fulford expressed deep concern over the necessity of a tragic event to prompt significant changes in online retail processes. He emphasized the urgency for platforms like Amazon to rectify deficiencies in age verification procedures for potentially lethal items. The report urged a proactive approach to prevent the delivery of dangerous weapons to underage individuals, stressing the importance of swift and decisive actions to avoid future tragedies.
