One individual has tragically passed away, while another is in critical condition following an incident where a car allegedly veered into pedestrians at a Comic Con gathering. The event took place around 5pm local time at the well-known Supanova Comic Con and Gaming event in Melbourne, Australia.
According to authorities, a grey Toyota car veered off Langs Road near the Melbourne Showgrounds, striking two pedestrians. Regrettably, one pedestrian succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while the second victim was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening wounds. The Victoria Police mentioned that a male suspect has been apprehended and is set to be interrogated.
An eyewitness named Tom narrated to Nine News that as he was leaving the festival with his family, a silver Toyota recklessly sped by them. He recounted hearing screeching noises as the car mounted the curb at high speed, hitting multiple individuals.
Tom recounted that the vehicle executed a U-turn and then stalled as it approached him. He managed to detain the driver, preventing him from escaping. Tom’s wife, who is a paramedic, provided medical assistance to one of the victims until emergency services arrived. The witness described the situation as intense, mentioning that the injured individual was immobile but still breathing.
Authorities have cordoned off a significant crime scene, given the gravity of the incident. It is estimated that thousands of attendees were present at the event, with other witnesses describing the scene as harrowing.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the Major Collision Investigation Unit is actively probing the fatal collision in Ascot Vale. The circumstances leading to the incident are currently under investigation, and the authorities continue to delve into the matter to ascertain the details.
