Downing Street has responded to Donald Trump’s threat to reassess the UK’s sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. No10 reiterated the UK’s clear stance that it holds sovereignty over the territory, following the US President’s recent comments. Trump is reportedly contemplating repercussions against Britain for not cooperating in the Iran conflict.

A leaked Pentagon email has disclosed potential measures for Trump to retaliate against Nato allies for insufficient support in the Middle East. Among these options is a review of US diplomatic backing for European territories like the Falklands, located in the South Atlantic near Argentina.

The disclosure has triggered outrage, with Falklands War veteran Simon Weston likening Trump to a playground bully. A No10 spokesperson emphasized the UK’s unwavering position on the Falkland Islands, asserting that sovereignty belongs to the UK and the islanders’ right to self-determination is fundamental and consistent.

Regarding the US President’s remarks, the spokesman emphasized that the UK’s stance on Iran will not change. Despite Buenos Aires asserting a claim over the islands, which are also known as Las Malvinas, the UK administers them. The US supported Britain during the Falklands War in 1982, resulting in casualties on both sides.

Veteran Simon Weston stressed that the Falklands issue is unrelated to Trump’s agenda, emphasizing the islanders’ desire for peaceful coexistence. Calls have emerged to cancel King Charles’s upcoming state visit to the US in response to Trump’s actions.

Trump has also threatened to impose tariffs on the UK if it maintains a digital services tax on American tech companies. The President’s plan to review support for European territories was revealed in a Pentagon memo, which also suggested punitive actions against Nato allies.

In response to the situation, Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson highlighted President Trump’s concerns about allies’ support and the need for credible options to address the matter. Reports indicate considerations of withdrawing troops from Europe amid the escalating tensions.
