England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is currently probing Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson for their presence in a nightclub during an incident post-England’s triumph over New Zealand at Lord’s. This incident breached the midnight curfew that was imposed on players due to disciplinary concerns arising from the Ashes series and New Zealand tour.

Reports of excessive drinking during the trips had sparked worries about a drinking culture, notably during a break in Noosa, where Harry Brook had to apologize and was fined £30,000 for a drunken incident in Wellington. The ongoing investigation involves Atkinson, aged 28, and Stokes, the 35-year-old England captain who had been cleared of affray in 2018.

After assisting England in securing a 115-run victory against New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s, Stokes and Atkinson were reported to have visited a nightclub as part of their celebration. The ECB has enforced a midnight curfew on England players following concerns of a drinking culture during the troubled Ashes tour in Australia.

The ECB statement mentioned that an investigation is ongoing regarding a breach of team protocols after the first Men’s Test against New Zealand, involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson at a nightclub during the early hours of Monday. The ECB is gathering more details, and an update on the squad for the second Test will be provided later.

Despite the victory over New Zealand, news of Stokes and Atkinson breaking the curfew set after reported drinking incidents during the Ashes tour has cast a shadow on the team. The ECB had conducted a review of the Ashes tour, where concerns were raised about the team environment being too relaxed. This recent incident poses a potential embarrassment for the team.

Brook’s £30,000 fine for a drunken incident in Wellington, where he was denied entry to a nightclub, had sparked apologies and reflections on responsibility and professionalism. Brook expressed deep regret for letting down his team and fans, vowing to learn from the mistake.

The win against New Zealand provided relief to captain Stokes, head coach Brendon McCullum, and cricket director Rob Key after the disappointing Ashes tour. However, the off-field events involving Stokes and Atkinson have brought renewed scrutiny to the team’s conduct.
