Budget airline easyJet is set to introduce a new seasonal summer route from London Gatwick to Newquay, providing travelers with convenient access to the picturesque beaches of Cornwall. The route will allow passengers to reach the stunning Cornish coastline in just over an hour, bypassing traffic congestion.
Known for its golden sandy beaches and popular among surfers, Newquay offers a variety of beach experiences. From the bustling Fistral Beach, where surfers can be spotted riding the waves, to the tranquil Porth Beach with its calm waters and charming seaside cafes, Newquay has something for every beach enthusiast.
Starting from June 23, easyJet will operate the London Gatwick to Newquay route until August 29, with flights scheduled twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Tickets are priced from £30.99 one way, making it an affordable option for travelers seeking a quick getaway to Cornwall during the summer season.
Despite its convenience, the new flight route has sparked debate over its environmental impact. Comparisons show that taking a train from London Paddington to Newquay results in significantly lower carbon emissions compared to driving or flying the same distance. However, the speed and affordability of the easyJet flight may attract business travelers and short-break tourists seeking a faster travel option.
Kevin Doyle, easyJet UK Country Manager, expressed excitement about the new route, highlighting the increased connectivity it offers to London and the South East. Nigel Scott, Commercial Director of Cornwall Airport Newquay, also welcomed the new service, emphasizing its affordability and convenience for visitors during the peak summer season.
This announcement follows the discontinuation of Skybus services funded by Cornwall Council, due to rising fuel costs and declining bookings. With Newquay Airport handling over 407,609 passengers in 2024 and offering various flight options, including year-round services by Ryanair and seasonal routes by easyJet, the airport continues to be a key gateway for travelers visiting Cornwall and beyond.
