In a chilling display of indifference, a driver, Dean Tolan, was captured smirking outside Sheffield Crown Court just before his sentencing for causing the death of 29-year-old Ellie Smart through reckless driving. Tolan, 36, was seen appearing nonchalant, using his phone hands-free, joking with others, and carrying a large bag while waiting to enter the court premises.
Despite his initial demeanor, Tolan later broke down in tears as he received a nine-year jail term and a ten-year driving ban for the tragic incident that occurred on January 25, 2024, in Sheffield. The court revealed that Tolan was speeding at 58 miles per hour when he fatally struck Ms. Smart, who was crossing the road. Shockingly, he was not wearing his required glasses at the time, violating his license conditions.
Judge Jeremy Richardson KC condemned Tolan’s actions, describing his behavior as a blatant disregard for rules and an arrogant attitude. Tolan was also found to have been using his phone right before the accident, further highlighting his negligence.
