Neighbors of Shamar Elkins, the alleged perpetrator in the tragic incident that claimed the lives of eight children aged one to 12, recounted the moment they witnessed him fleeing from the scene.
According to authorities, the gunman in Louisiana unleashed a horrific attack on two residences early Sunday, resulting in the deaths of seven of his children and injuries to their mother, along with the killing of another child. This appalling event marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years.
The Police Department spokesperson, Chris Bordelon, stated that the suspect, Shamar Elkins, initially shot the mother and then proceeded to take the lives of the eight children. In total, ten individuals were shot, with two women surviving the harrowing ordeal. One of the female victims sustained critical injuries, believed to be from a gunshot wound to the head.
The tragic sequence of events unfolded on a Sunday morning when the assailant targeted a residence in Shreveport, where the devastating massacre transpired.
Following the shootings, Elkins fled to Harrison Street, approximately a quarter of a mile away, initiating a high-speed chase with law enforcement after committing a carjacking. Subsequently, Elkins drove to a third location where he was confronted and fatally shot by police officers.
Witness Liza Demming, residing nearby, captured footage on her security camera showing the suspect fleeing the scene accompanied by the sound of gunshots. She described seeing him hastily leaving the premises along with departing vehicles.
Later, Demming discovered the covered body of a child on the roof of a neighboring house, expressing shock and stating that she was acquainted with the suspect, recognizing him as a father figure who had recently interacted with the children.
Pastor Marty T. Johnson Sr., of St. Gabriel Community Baptist Church, revealed that the family involved had rented a property from someone in his employ, although he had limited interaction with them.
Louisiana State Police disclosed that they have been requested by the Shreveport police to lead the investigation into the incident. They confirmed that no officers were injured during the pursuit that extended into Bossier City on Sunday morning.
The state police have urged the public to come forward with any photos, videos, or information that could assist in the investigation.
