Tensions have escalated in the Middle East following a warning from China to Donald Trump not to interfere in its dealings with Iran. This came after Trump imposed a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz. In a bold move, Beijing sent a tanker through the strait without any intervention from the US Navy.
In a strong show of support for Tehran, China openly defied Trump’s actions by allowing a sanctioned Chinese tanker to navigate through the disputed waterway. Beijing’s Defense Minister, Dong Jun, emphasized that China will uphold its trade and energy agreements with Iran despite American pressure.
Beijing criticized the blockade as reckless and irresponsible, with its foreign ministry cautioning that such actions could disrupt the fragile regional peace. A Chinese tanker, the Rich Starry, operated by Shanghai Xuanrun Shipping, sailed through the strait despite US sanctions, highlighting the ambiguity of Trump’s blockade.
US Central Command clarified that the blockade targeted vessels heading to or from Iranian ports, not those passing through the strait to other destinations. Critics noted the limited scope of the blockade compared to Trump’s assertions.
President Xi Jinping of China stressed the importance of upholding international law and maintaining stability in the region. He called for respect for national sovereignty and consistent application of international law to prevent regression into chaos.
Xi Jinping’s remarks marked a significant intervention in the ongoing Middle East conflict, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence, respect for sovereignty, adherence to international law, and a comprehensive approach to security and development.
