The Foreign Office has issued a travel advisory for a popular vacation spot that attracts many British tourists annually.

On April 15, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) updated its travel guidance for the Maldives, specifically warning about swimming safety in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives is well-known for its clear turquoise waters, making it a top destination for snorkeling, swimming, and water activities.

Despite the picturesque waters surrounding the Maldives, the FCDO cautioned about the presence of strong tidal currents that could potentially carry individuals away from the shore. They highlighted that more than eight British citizens have drowned in the region since 2021 and emphasized the importance of understanding and minimizing these risks.

In their updated alert, the FCDO advised travelers to familiarize themselves with the safety information provided by their tour operators and to be informed about the local swimming conditions upon arrival at the resort. They recommended swimming only in supervised areas or places designated as safe for tourists, and to heed warning signs or flags, avoiding areas with strong currents or hazardous underwater conditions.

Additionally, the FCDO stressed the significance of being vigilant of potential dangers, seeking local advice before entering the sea. They specifically mentioned accidents involving boat propellers in the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) and nearby whale shark tourism sites, urging extra caution when swimming or snorkeling near boats and compliance with local safety instructions.

Regarding travel disruptions due to escalating situations in the Middle East, the FCDO mentioned that airspace closures and flight delays may affect travel connections to and from the Maldives. While not discouraging travel to the Maldives, the FCDO advised travelers to stay informed about potential disruptions.

For individuals planning a trip to the Maldives, the Foreign Office outlined precautionary measures before departure. They also highlighted the possibility of terrorist attacks in the Maldives, advising travelers to remain vigilant, stay updated with local news, and adhere to guidance from local authorities.

For comprehensive travel advice on the Maldives, visitors can refer to the Foreign Office website.
