The recent Pan Pacific championships showcased contrasting performances by Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh in Irvine, Calif. Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly event and later clinched a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, marking her fourth and fifth medals of the competition, respectively.
In the 100m butterfly, the 26-year-old Ruck from Kelowna, B.C., achieved a personal best time of 56.71 seconds, coming second to American Gretchen Walsh, who finished in 55.15 seconds. Australian Alexandria Perkins claimed the bronze with a time of 56.75 seconds.
Ruck expressed her satisfaction with her performance, stating, “This one [the women’s 100m butterfly] was a lot of fun.” She emphasized the importance of rest and trust in her body’s abilities.
Conversely, McIntosh faced disappointment after winning the B final of the women’s 400m freestyle event but failing to qualify for the A final, taking full responsibility for what she described as a “misjudgment.”
McIntosh, who placed second in the women’s 200m freestyle and won gold in the 400m individual medley, expressed frustration and vowed to analyze her training methods for improvement. Despite the setback, she is set to compete in the 200m IM, an event where she holds world records.
On the men’s side, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney won his first international gold in the men’s 100m backstroke earlier.
Ruck led the Canadian women to a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay, alongside teammates Mary-Sophie Harvey, Leah Tigert, and Leilani Fack. The U.S. team claimed gold in the event.
Overall, the Canadian swimmers showcased strong performances at the championships, with both successes and setbacks shaping their experiences in the competition.
