A recent study has shed light on the complex evolution of the Milky Way galaxy, revealing a significant galactic merger that took place approximately 11.8 billion years ago. This event, which occurred when the universe was still in its early stages, marked the Milky Way’s first-known merger with a smaller dwarf galaxy.

Researchers utilized the Hubble and Gaia telescopes to analyze star clusters near the center of the Milky Way, uncovering evidence of the ancient merger. The dwarf galaxy involved in the merger was estimated to have a mass equivalent to 500 million times that of the sun at the time of the event.

The merger, named Low-energy-Kraken-Heracles (LKH), injected a substantial amount of stars and interstellar gas into the Milky Way, fueling star formation and contributing to the galaxy’s growth. This influx of material, including dark matter, played a crucial role in shaping the early history of our galaxy.

According to lead author Davide Massari, the merger was relatively peaceful in terms of star interactions but triggered significant star formation due to the collision of gases from both galaxies. The study highlights the importance of understanding the Milky Way’s past mergers in unraveling the mysteries of our cosmic origins.

In addition to the LKH merger, the Milky Way has been involved in two other major galactic mergers, further shaping its evolution over billions of years. Each of these merger events has had a lasting impact on the formation of our solar system and the Earth itself.

By reconstructing the galactic history of the Milky Way, scientists aim to gain insights into fundamental questions about the origins of our universe and our place within it. This ongoing research underscores the significance of studying past galactic interactions to unravel the cosmic story of our existence.
