In her childhood in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV series set on Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she and her grandmother would tune in to watch “Road to Avonlea,” with actress Mag Ruffman’s portrayal of Aunt Olivia leaving a lasting impression on her. When Czajka learned about a fan convention on P.E.I. featuring Ruffman, she didn’t hesitate to secure a ticket.
Describing Ruffman as her childhood version of a Disney princess, Czajka expressed her excitement at being at the convention during a recent interview. Fans of the beloved series traveled from around the globe to the Island for the fully booked event. “Road to Avonlea,” a critically acclaimed Canadian show that aired in over 100 countries, made its debut in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.
The series followed the adventures of young Sarah Stanley, played by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her late mother’s relatives at the dawn of the 20th century. Loosely inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the show resonated with audiences worldwide.
The convention, spanning three days, featured oyster and wine tastings, panel discussions with the cast and crew, and excursions to filming locations, Montgomery’s birthplace, and other significant sites related to the series. Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, the event organizer, highlighted the enduring appeal of the show’s themes of kindness and friendship.
Ruffman, reflecting on the convention, emphasized the emotional connection fans still have with the show even after three decades. She admitted that thoughts of her character, Olivia, occasionally cross her mind, indicating the lasting impact of the role on her.
Czajka, now reliving the series with her own children, noted the rarity of finding a show that can be enjoyed by both adults and kids alike. She emphasized the timeless quality of “Road to Avonlea,” which continues to bring families together for shared viewing experiences.
