Initially not planning a film about Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective changed after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie. The script draws from Bourdain’s youth, particularly his experiences detailed in “Kitchen Confidential,” condensed into a narrative set during one summer in Provincetown, Mass.
Avoiding the pressure of depicting the older Bourdain, the film delves into the chef’s formative years and personal struggles. Johnson emphasized the relatable aspects of Bourdain’s youth, such as his relationships and self-discovery, aiming to create a narrative that resonates with audiences beyond idolizing the late chef.
“Tony” is set to hit theaters in Canada on August 14, offering a unique perspective on Bourdain’s early life through the eyes of Johnson and Sessa.
