Sir Keir Starmer reassured the public regarding the economic impact of the Iran conflict, advising against panic while acknowledging potential adjustments to shopping patterns and vacation plans. Leading a crisis committee meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized the government’s current confidence in supply chains amidst efforts to reopen the crucial Strait of Hormuz, which has been obstructed by Iran due to ongoing military actions.

Plans for a joint military mission involving the UK and France to safeguard shipping through the strait are in progress, awaiting a ceasefire. Sir Keir highlighted the existing impact on the UK economy and the importance of mitigating further repercussions through reopening the strait. He mentioned ongoing efforts by government officials to address the crisis’s effects, expressing confidence in the current supply situation, including the reopening of a CO2 plant and sufficient jet fuel availability for airlines.

Acknowledging the uncertainty of the conflict’s duration, Sir Keir noted potential changes in consumer behavior concerning holiday destinations and shopping habits. Urging calm, he emphasized the government’s decision to refrain from direct involvement in the war to shield British citizens from its fallout. A meeting of the Middle East Response Committee (Merc) is scheduled to address the crisis fallout, with senior officials and Bank of England representatives in attendance.

The Prime Minister highlighted the profound impact of the conflict on global stability, stressing the need for a strategic response. Oil prices surged following the failure of peace talks between the US and Iran, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining a critical point of contention. Despite previous optimism on strait reopening, recent developments have led to renewed price spikes in the oil market.

To mitigate economic uncertainties, the government has implemented measures such as capping household energy costs and freezing fuel duty. Sir Keir reiterated these initiatives, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting households amid the ongoing crisis.
