During a speech at the USDAW trade union conference, the Prime Minister condemned the threats and violence faced by retail staff, emphasizing the need for enhanced protection measures. He shared a poignant letter he had received from a woman who experienced racist abuse while working in a shop, highlighting the distressing reality faced by many shop workers.
Recent data from the Office for National Statistics indicated a slight decrease in shoplifting incidents in 2025, following a previous surge to record levels. However, there were still approximately 510,000 reported cases within a year. Home Office statistics revealed a 17% increase in the overall charge rate for shoplifting suspects, attributed to heightened town center patrols.
The Prime Minister underscored the government’s commitment to combatting the issue by introducing new legislation to criminalize abuse and assault directed at retail workers. He acknowledged the scale of the challenge but noted the positive trend indicated by the rise in the number of individuals charged and the reduction in shop theft incidents.
Furthermore, he highlighted the effectiveness of technology in boosting apprehensions of shoplifters, citing instances where some police forces have doubled the number of arrests. The Prime Minister referenced a letter from a supermarket worker, Finnola, who shared her harrowing experience of racial abuse at work, reaffirming the importance of addressing such misconduct.
