Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has been handed a four-year suspension from professional tennis for declining a doping test in December. Vondrousova, who previously held the world No.6 ranking, expressed her frustration on Instagram when a doping control official arrived at her residence for an out-of-competition test.
In a recent statement, Vondrousova disclosed that the unexpected visit left her feeling “scared” and violated her privacy, leading to a state of extreme stress. She emphasized that her refusal was not an attempt to avoid the test but rather due to concerns for her safety.
Medical professionals confirmed that Vondrousova experienced an Acute Stress Reaction and Generalised Anxiety Disorder in response to the incident. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) charged her with test refusal, resulting in the lengthy suspension without a satisfactory explanation for her actions.
The ITIA announced the ban through an official statement, citing Vondrousova’s non-compliance during the out-of-competition testing as the reason for the severe penalty. The ITIA Chief Executive emphasized the importance of fair competition and player safety in maintaining the integrity of the sport.
During the tribunal proceedings, Vondrousova highlighted the impact of stress and mental health issues on her decision-making process. Testimony from the doping control officer involved was also considered, ultimately leading to the conclusion that there were insufficient grounds to justify her refusal.
