Video footage shows Trump faltering as he made his way offstage with the help of security and secret service agents. Following the incident, Trump was temporarily held in the secure presidential suite at the hotel as efforts were made to resume the event. Eventually, on the advice of the Secret Service, Trump was returned to the White House.
Trump later recounted that it was Melania who first recognized the alarming noise, initially mistaking it for something innocuous. Reflecting on the situation, he expressed surprise at the sudden turn of events and emphasized the importance of swift reactions. Trump addressed the incident at a White House press briefing shortly after the violence occurred.
The shooting transpired just outside the grand ballroom hosting the dinner guests, interrupting the annual event meant to celebrate journalism and the First Amendment. This year’s dinner drew heightened attention as it marked Trump’s first attendance since assuming the presidency.
