Michelle Hanley, a 53-year-old teacher, sought companionship after her children left home. Growing up with a German Shepherd, she decided to bring an Italian Greyhound, Dante, into her life due to their gentle nature. Initially well-behaved, Dante’s behavior changed at eight months old after negative encounters with other dogs.
Michelle noticed Dante becoming anxious and reactive towards other dogs during walks. Seeking help, she turned to a local trainer, but Dante’s behavior worsened. Feeling overwhelmed and considering giving him up, Michelle discovered Woodgreen, a charity supporting pets and owners in the UK.
Woodgreen, which assisted 5,744 pets and owners at home last year, provided Michelle and Dante with support. Lead outreach officer Steph Drake identified Dante’s fear-based aggression and taught Michelle to interpret his body language and respond calmly in stress-inducing situations.
Woodgreen’s mission is to ensure pets have loving homes and owners receive necessary support. They work with owners to prevent pet separations during crises and provide care until pets find new homes if necessary. Following Steph’s guidance, Michelle saw a significant improvement in Dante’s behavior.
Michelle noted a remarkable transformation in Dante’s confidence and relaxation. By understanding and reassuring him, Michelle saw positive changes in Dante’s behavior. Steph praised Michelle’s dedication and the progress Dante made, highlighting his newfound confidence and happiness.
