Hilsea Lido, a well-known UK swimming spot, is preparing to welcome visitors this upcoming bank holiday weekend after undergoing a £7 million renovation and a four-year closure period. Located in Portsmouth, this iconic attraction has been a beloved destination for over nine decades since its establishment in 1935. Initially functioning as an unheated saltwater pool, it even served as a training facility for Team GB’s diving team during the 1936 and 1952 Olympic Games.
Despite its long history of hosting numerous swimmers, the lido experienced significant deterioration over time, raising concerns regarding health and safety. Consequently, in 2022, the freshwater pool was temporarily shut down for extensive refurbishment. Now, after receiving a £7.75 million facelift, Hilsea Lido is ready to reopen on May 2 with a rejuvenated appearance, boasting a fresh pool base and vibrant blue waters.
The revitalization project also included the replacement of outdated facilities with new amenities such as upgraded toilets, showers, and brightly colored changing rooms surrounding the sparkling pool. Thanks to support from the Levelling Up fund, the lido now features additional attractions like a sauna, an ice cream parlor, and a food van, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Proudly showcasing its transformation on social media, Hilsea Lido received enthusiastic feedback from eager swimmers, expressing admiration for the revamped look. General Manager Judit Kollat emphasized the significance of Portsmouth City Council’s efforts in restoring the lido, aiming to transform it into a vibrant community hub promoting mental and physical well-being for all.
CEO of South Downs Leisure, Duncan Anderson, echoed the excitement surrounding the reopening, highlighting the nostalgia residents feel toward Hilsea Lido and their eagerness to return for a refreshing swim. Operating hours for the lido will be from 6am to 9pm Monday to Thursday, closing at 8pm on Fridays, and welcoming visitors from 7am to 7pm on weekends, with last entries an hour before closing.
