Android smartphones continue to dominate the global market for several reasons. Primarily, they are often more budget-friendly compared to Apple products, offer greater customization options, and boast a wider selection of models due to numerous manufacturers producing them. However, a notable issue arises from the varying support periods for different devices.

For instance, the latest Galaxy S26 series and Google Pixel phones are promised up to seven years of both Android system updates and security patches. In contrast, some older Galaxy A-series phones only receive around four years of support, while certain devices from companies like Xiaomi and Motorola may see updates for just three years.

Although a phone will not suddenly become inoperable, it will eventually stop receiving crucial security updates and software enhancements, potentially sooner than users anticipate.

Android updates generally fall into two main categories. The first involves major Android version upgrades released annually by Google, introducing new features, enhancements, and alterations to the system. The second type comprises security updates issued throughout the year to address vulnerabilities, fix bugs, and safeguard devices from potential threats.

Several Android manufacturers, including Samsung and Google, have recently extended their support periods for phones. Nonetheless, many older devices do not receive the same level of ongoing support.

To determine your Android phone’s remaining support lifespan, you can easily check by finding your phone model in the Settings menu. Visit endoflife.date to view a list of devices, their expected support timelines, and scheduled update cessation dates. The website also uses color-coded warnings to indicate when a device is nearing the end of its support period or has already surpassed it.

Even after a phone reaches its end of support, it can still perform basic functions like calls and messaging. However, it will no longer receive new features or security enhancements, potentially exposing it to cybersecurity risks.

According to TechAdvisor, using an unsupported device can be particularly risky for activities such as online banking, shopping, email access, or password storage as unpatched security vulnerabilities could be exploited by malicious software.

It is advisable to check your phone’s update schedule promptly to be aware of when support will end, prompting consideration for an upgrade to a newer device.
