I recently had my cervical screening appointment and was surprised by how long it took. Although I’ve had these tests before, the interval between appointments has now changed from every three years to every five years. According to Cancer Research, there are around 3,299 new cases of cervical cancer annually in the UK, with 880 deaths recorded from 2022 to 2024. The important fact is that 99.8% of cervical cancer cases are preventable.

Feeling nervous before my appointment, I walked to my GP’s office on a sunny day, listening to music. The appointment was scheduled for 3.50pm, and during check-in, I encountered some minor disruptions from another patient in the waiting room. However, these distractions momentarily eased my nerves.

At the two-story GP practice, I climbed the stairs to reach the first floor where my appointment was. The waiting room was empty when I arrived. The senior nurse practitioner, Tracy, greeted me and guided me to her office through a maze-like corridor.

Tracy explained the cervical screening process, including the purpose of the test, the cell examination procedure, and the expected waiting time for results. She also checked my weight, inquired about my summer plans, and confirmed my blood pressure was normal.

Discussing the possibility of abnormal results from the test, Tracy reassured me and emphasized that changed cells in the cervix do not always indicate cancer. Despite describing cervical cancer as a severe disease if not detected early, she emphasized that it is preventable.

After the detailed briefing, I underwent the screening behind a curtain. Tracy’s explanation during the test made it more comfortable, and the procedure, though slightly uncomfortable, was over quickly. The entire appointment, from start to finish, lasted only 10 minutes.

For those feeling anxious about their cervical screening, it is essential to know that the process is brief but potentially life-saving. Cervical screening tests are estimated to save 5,000 lives annually in the UK by preventing cervical cancer through the detection of high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and monitoring of cervical cell changes.

Helen Hyndman MBE, lead nurse at The Eve Appeal, emphasized the importance of cervical screening and provided tips to make the appointment more comfortable. Additional information and support can be found on their website or through the Ask Eve nurse service.

In conclusion, despite the nervousness and discomfort that may accompany cervical screening, these 10 minutes could have a significant impact on your health.
