A significant number of portable phone chargers are being urgently recalled following a series of alarming incidents, including one tragic fatality. Approximately 429,200 wireless power banks are being withdrawn from the market due to concerns about potential overheating and fire hazards. These chargers, manufactured by Casely, came under scrutiny in April last year when the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) highlighted multiple cases of lithium-ion batteries overheating, swelling, or catching fire while in use. This led to a number of individuals sustaining minor burns, with one unfortunate incident resulting in the death of a 75-year-old woman in New Jersey. The woman was using the charger when it suddenly ignited, causing severe burns that ultimately proved fatal.
In a separate incident earlier this year, a woman using a similar wireless charger experienced it catching fire and exploding while on a plane, resulting in burn injuries. The recall of these dangerous chargers is part of a broader safety alert issued by the CPSC, encompassing various products posing serious risks such as choking hazards, battery ingestion, electric shock, fire, and severe burn dangers.
Additionally, Expandable Magic Pocket Staffs marketed to aspiring magicians have been recalled due to reports of sudden and unexpected openings causing injuries, including eye damage and cuts. Parents are also cautioned about toy recalls involving children’s activity cubes and Montessori-style play sets that could potentially pose choking hazards. Certain gadgets containing button batteries, like finger lights and toy lasers, are deemed life-threatening if swallowed due to the risk of severe internal burns. Furthermore, some household items, including electric pressure washers sold on Amazon, have been recalled due to dangerous electrical faults that could lead to electric shock or electrocution.
Specific product recalls include Arch Studio tea kettles sold at Macy’s stores and online, where detachable handles have raised burn injury concerns. Fisher & Paykel freestanding professional gas ovens and adult portable bed rails are also subject to recalls due to significant burn, entrapment, and asphyxiation risks. Generac Power Systems’ portable generators and Apex Gaming PCs’ computer power supplies are being recalled over fire and shock hazards, respectively. Consumers are strongly advised to discontinue using any affected products and refer to official recall notifications for further guidance.
