Jon Kortmansky was on a business trip when his wife Lori stumbled upon the home of their dreams. Enchanted by the one-bedroom apartment’s dark wooden floors, Lori placed the highest bid in 2005 before Jon had even seen it. An expert interior designer, Lori dedicated herself to transforming the space into a unique haven. A decade later, the couple acquired the adjacent apartment, merged them by demolishing a wall, and crafted their ideal residence.
Upon moving into their new three-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment with a 240-square-foot balcony, Jon reminisces that Lori’s essence permeated every corner, even when she wasn’t physically present. Together, they cultivated an extraordinary life filled with travel adventures, particularly enjoying skiing during winter weekends.
Despite their bustling lifestyle, Lori, Jon’s college sweetheart, harbored a profound secret from everyone except Jon — she had been battling brain cancer since her twenties. Their love story began at Indiana University, blossoming from friendship to a deep romance. Jon fondly recalls Lori’s infectious smile that illuminated any room, her perpetual joy, and her unwavering optimism towards people.
Shortly after their marriage at 25, Lori started experiencing concerning symptoms like head rushes, eye flutters, and a metallic taste in her mouth. Within weeks, she received a devastating diagnosis of an aggressive brain tumor the size of a plum. Following the diagnosis, they faced a critical decision about starting a family before Lori underwent a fertility-compromising experimental treatment.
Throughout her health journey, marked by numerous recurrences, surgeries, and radiation sessions, Lori’s resilience and grace never wavered. She concealed her illness from many, embodying a remarkable strength that left Jon in awe. Despite the adversities, Lori established her own business, learned a new language, and explored the world, embracing life with unwavering courage.
As Lori’s illness progressed, Jon became her primary caregiver, managing her needs around the clock while juggling his legal career to cover her extensive medical expenses. Lori’s passing in 2021 left Jon shattered, devoid of the warmth and comfort their home once held. Overwhelmed by memories of Lori’s final days, Jon found solace in moving to a new place, where the weight of the past gradually lifted, easing his migraines and allowing him to look towards a brighter future.
Now, Jon has embarked on a journey of self-discovery, forging new connections, embracing happiness, and reclaiming his life. With a newfound sense of purpose, he honors Lori’s memory by living fully again, knowing she would be proud of the resilience he has shown in rebuilding his world.
