John O’Driscoll, a key figure in the Garda investigations of the Kinahan family, saw the imposition of sanctions against them by US authorities during a significant press conference in Dublin in April 2022. Sadly, O’Driscoll passed away in September 2024, missing the moment when Daniel Kinahan was finally apprehended in Dubai after more than four years.
Before his death, O’Driscoll had already achieved significant successes in dismantling the Kinahan cartel, leading to the incarceration of several high-ranking members and foot soldiers. The cartel, led by Kinahan and his associates, had orchestrated violent attacks, targeting individuals linked to the Hutch family.
Despite fleeing to the UAE for safety, Kinahan’s capture was made possible through the persistent efforts of O’Driscoll and the National Drugs and Organised Crime Unit, culminating in a lengthy investigation.
Doubts were cast on the ability of the Garda to bring Kinahan to justice, especially as he appeared to be living luxuriously in Dubai, attending high-profile events. However, extensive evidence gathered by the Garda, including a voluminous file submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions, ultimately led to Kinahan being charged with serious offenses.
Kinahan’s involvement in the boxing world, particularly his association with Tyson Fury, shed light on his criminal activities, prompting international agencies to take action against him. Despite setbacks, Kinahan attempted to regain influence in the sporting world, but his arrest in Dubai marked a turning point.
The UAE’s stance against harboring criminals and international pressure finally caught up with Kinahan, who had believed he was immune to prosecution. Now, facing the consequences of his actions, Kinahan, known for his criminal background and familial ties, will have to answer for his crimes.
