In Louisiana, a tragic event unfolded as one of the children among the eight victims of a mass shooting was discovered deceased on a rooftop where they had attempted to flee, as per authorities.
The incident occurred around 6am Central Time when Shamar Elkins, a 31-year-old army veteran, reportedly carried out the attacks at three different locations in the Shreveport area. At a press briefing, police revealed the ages of the victims, ranging from 1 to 12 years old, eliciting shocked reactions from those present.
Corporal Chris Bordelon of the Shreveport Police Department described the extensive crime scene spanning three sites in the Cedar Grove neighborhood. Following the assaults, Elkins engaged in a carjacking and later encountered a fatal confrontation with pursuing officers.
Bordelon disclosed that seven children were tragically found deceased inside a second residence, with one child located on the roof, presumably attempting to escape. The relationship of the child on the roof to the perpetrator remains unclear.
State Representative Tammy Phelps mentioned that some children had tried to escape through the rear exit, emphasizing the challenging circumstances faced by law enforcement and first responders.
Reports indicated that two women sustained critical injuries in the incident. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and US House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed sorrow over the tragedy and commended the swift actions of law enforcement.
Investigators have yet to determine the motive behind the violence. Bordelon characterized the shooting as a primarily domestic event, underscoring the ongoing investigative efforts.
This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. since January 2024 when eight individuals lost their lives in a Chicago suburb, according to data compiled by The Associated Press, USA Today, and Northeastern University.
