Vodafone is introducing a new method for internet access that utilizes a 5G mobile signal instead of traditional copper or fiber connections. This innovative Wi-Fi router is particularly beneficial for households without access to faster full fiber options or for individuals seeking more flexibility, such as renters or students who frequently change residences.
One key advantage of this new system is its simple installation process. Since it operates on Vodafone’s network, there is no need for a technician to visit or perform any drilling. Users can easily set it up by plugging it in, turning it on, and instantly connecting to the internet.
It is important to note that this new system offers speeds of up to 150Mbps, which is sufficient for activities like streaming movies on Netflix, sending emails, and working from home, although it falls short of the speeds achievable with full fiber connections, which can exceed 900Mbps.
For reference, downloading a full HD movie using this 5G router would take approximately 8 minutes, whereas a fiber gigabit connection would do it in just 40 seconds.
To assist consumers in making informed decisions, Vodafone is launching an integrated availability checker on their website. By entering their postcode, customers can determine whether full fiber or 5G Broadband will deliver the fastest speeds in their location.
This is not the first time Vodafone has provided 5G internet access, having previously offered the GigaCube device, which has now been replaced by this new router.
Commenting on the launch, Rob Winterschladen, Vodafone’s Consumer Director, stated, “Millions of households are still paying for unreliable and slow broadband. With Vodafone 5G Broadband, we offer a fast and hassle-free alternative at great value, without installation delays.”
Moreover, Three, now part of Vodafone, also offers a similar service. Vodafone’s plans start from £21 per month, while Three’s home broadband is currently priced at £11 for the first nine months.
