Millions of internet users in the UK are familiar with the challenge of dealing with online congestion when trying to access the internet. This issue typically arises during the evening, when household members are simultaneously engaging in activities like streaming movies, downloading files, and video chatting with friends.
During daytime hours, when fewer people are online, internet speeds generally remain fast and consistent. However, in the evening, as more users log on, local networks can become strained, leading to a noticeable slowdown in speeds.
To illustrate, broadband operates similar to a highway – the more users on it simultaneously, the slower the traffic moves. This is why many households experience a significant performance drop between 7pm and 11pm.
A recent study conducted by Broadband Genie has revealed the UK regions most impacted by slowdowns during peak hours, with Wigan (WN1) identified as the most affected area. According to the findings, broadband users in Wigan witness a decrease in average download speeds from 167Mbps during off-peak periods to just 75Mbps in the evening, marking a 55% decline.
Other areas significantly impacted by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).
Not all parts of the UK experience slowdowns in the evening; some areas actually see an improvement. Newport ranked highest in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.
Broadband Genie explained, “Have you noticed your internet slowing down in the evening? Like roads, internet networks can face congestion. We analyzed 144,509 broadband speed tests to identify locations where performance changes the most at peak times. Customers in Wigan saw the largest drop, with speeds decreasing by 55% during busy hours.”
The report also highlighted regional variations across the UK. Scotland emerged as the top performer overall, with broadband performance generally enhancing in the evenings. Wales and the East of England also demonstrated strong performance.
Conversely, the South West region experienced a decline of approximately 15% in average speeds during peak periods compared to daytime performance.
Experts in broadband suggest that households can take steps to enhance their home connection. Placing the router in an open, central location away from obstructions can improve signal quality. Providers like Virgin Media recommend regular router reboots to resolve temporary network issues.
