A man involved in a tragic mass shooting in Louisiana referenced “demons” before fatally shooting eight young children. Shamar Elkins, 31, admitted to feeling suicidal prior to the horrendous incident in Shreveport, where eight children between the ages of three and 11 lost their lives following a dispute with his spouse. Elkins, allegedly responsible for the deaths of seven of his own children, also critically injured his wife during the attack.

Elkins had previously opened up about struggling with dark thoughts before the Louisiana tragedy, cautioning his stepfather about the challenges of overcoming personal demons. According to reports, Elkins, who had a history of mental health issues, expressed suicidal tendencies during a conversation with his stepfather on Easter Sunday, revealing his despair over his wife seeking a divorce and his contemplation of suicide.

Despite efforts to offer support and encouragement, Elkins seemed increasingly despondent and mentioned the difficulty some face in battling their inner demons. After the conversation, Elkins abruptly ended the call, informing his children about their grandparents in Oklahoma City before his fatal encounter with law enforcement.

The deadly incident, described by authorities as a domestic matter, marked the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years, sparking widespread public outcry. Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith expressed shock and disbelief over the tragedy, stating his inability to comprehend the events that transpired.

Elkins, a military veteran, served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from 2013 to 2020, specializing in signal support and fire support roles. Following his death, the Army confirmed his service without any deployment during his tenure.
