An oversight with passports and flight bookings could lead to travelers being barred from boarding or facing additional charges at the airport.

Preparing for a trip abroad involves several essential checks to ensure a seamless and safe journey. These checks include verifying the passport’s validity, obtaining suitable travel insurance, reviewing travel advisories on the Foreign Office website, understanding entry requirements for the destination country, and being aware of the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES).

After completing these necessary steps, travelers move on to the enjoyable aspects of trip planning, such as booking a lavish hotel or resort, creating an appealing itinerary, selecting optimal flights, and making their way to the airport. However, amidst the excitement, a common mistake related to passports and flight reservations could disrupt travel plans significantly, but it can easily be prevented.

Gavin Lapidus, a Company Director at eShores, a UK-based travel agency, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the name on a traveler’s passport matches the name on their flight booking. Issues may arise with shortened names or nicknames, name changes (e.g., due to marriage), and spelling errors.

Failure to align the name on the booking with the passport could result in travelers being denied boarding, facing security or check-in delays, or incurring fees for name corrections, according to Gavin in an exclusive statement to the Mirror. He stressed the need to meticulously verify name details before finalizing bookings due to varying airline policies.

Furthermore, Gavin advised against using shortened names, nicknames, or aliases when booking flights. He highlighted that even minor discrepancies, like booking under ‘Bob’ instead of ‘Robert,’ could lead to boarding denials if the name does not precisely match the passport. Travelers should always use their complete legal name as stated in their passport to avoid complications.

Regarding correcting spelling errors, Gavin noted that minor mistakes might be rectified for a fee, but full name changes are typically not permitted. Travelers who identify errors should promptly contact their airline, as swift action improves the chances of resolving the issue. They should be prepared to provide valid identification and anticipate potential charges.

For easyJet passengers, title amendments or spelling corrections can be made through the airline’s website or mobile app at no extra cost. However, changing the name on a flight booking with easyJet incurs a charge of £60 online or £65 via customer service. In contrast, Ryanair charges £115 per passenger for online name changes and £160 through an agent, while Jet2 imposes a £50 fee for name changes made 15 days before departure and £150 for changes made within 14 days of departure.

In cases where travelers are married but have not updated their maiden name on their passport, Gavin advised that the name on the booking must match the passport name. There is no immediate legal obligation to change surnames after marriage, and travelers can continue using their maiden name passport until its expiration, provided the flight booking matches. Updating the passport with the married name can be done at any time using the marriage certificate.
