Sabastian Sawe shattered a longstanding marathon world record by completing the London Marathon in a remarkable time of 1:59:30, surpassing the previous record held by the late Kelvin Kiptum. This victory marked Sawe’s consecutive win at the event. Compared to his time of 2:02:27 last year, Sawe’s performance this year showed a significant improvement.

The elite men’s race unfolded as a tight competition between Sawe and Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, culminating in a thrilling finish where Sawe ultimately outpaced Kejelcha in the final stretch. Kejelcha also finished in under two hours, emphasizing the intense rivalry between the two runners.

Following his historic achievement, Sawe’s exceptional performance left Olympic silver medallist Steve Cram speechless, praising the record-breaking run as a momentous event in sporting history. Paula Radcliffe also lauded Sawe’s feat, stating that it would have a global impact.

During a post-race interview, Sawe expressed his excitement upon seeing his time, attributing his success to the support of the enthusiastic crowds. He acknowledged that his victory was not his alone but a collective triumph for all participants in the London Marathon.

In the women’s elite race, Tigst Assefa claimed victory for the second consecutive year, setting a new women’s London Marathon record with a time of 2:15:41. Hellen Obiri and Joyciline Jepkosgei from Kenya secured the second and third positions, respectively.

In the wheelchair races, Marcel Hug of Switzerland clinched his sixth consecutive victory in the men’s category, matching the record set by David Weir. Catherine Debrunner, also from Switzerland, successfully defended her title in the women’s wheelchair race.
