Embarking on our first cruise, my friend Paul’s confession about getting seasick on rowing boats sparked concern. Despite his prior avoidance of sea travel, we set sail on P&O’s Azura from the Port of Santa Cruz for a sunny exploration of the Canary Islands and Madeira.

Our journey began with a visit to Tenerife’s Mount Teide, where we experienced a stark contrast between winter surroundings and warm sunshine. Scaling the 3,715-meter volcano via a cable car revealed a snowy landscape, a stark juxtaposition to the volcanic terrain below.

Our cruise itinerary offered diverse excursions, showcasing unique landscapes and experiences. From exploring Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote to hiking around a volcano in Gran Canaria, each stop felt like stepping onto another planet.

Balancing island explorations with relaxation aboard the Azura, we indulged in the ship’s amenities. With numerous pools, a gym, spa, casino, and entertainment options, there was no shortage of activities to unwind and enjoy.

Dining aboard the ship was a highlight, with options ranging from sophisticated fine dining at Epicurean to flavorsome dishes at Sindhu and The Beach House. The variety in dining, entertainment, and relaxation amenities onboard catered to different preferences and budgets, making us newfound cruise enthusiasts.

The versatility of activities onboard, from fine dining to leisurely sunbathing, catered to various traveler types, ensuring a memorable holiday experience for couples, friends, and families alike.

After this enriching cruise experience, it’s certain that I won’t wait another 25 years before setting sail again. Prices for the Spain, Portugal & Canary Islands cruise (N617) start from £1,299pp, offering a 14-night journey departing from Southampton on 18 July aboard Ventura.
