Keir Starmer emphasized the critical role of Britain’s nuclear deterrent in national defense, cautioning against diverting attention from Russia amid the Iran crisis. The Prime Minister granted the Mirror exclusive access to accompany him on a Vanguard-Class submarine returning from an extended deployment. During his confidential visit to welcome Royal Navy submariners back to UK waters, Starmer aimed to signal a strong message to Vladimir Putin amidst heightened global tensions.

Starmer highlighted the significance of nuclear-armed submarines as the frontline of Britain’s defense strategy, serving as a deterrent to potential threats. Expressing gratitude to the crew for their dedication, he underscored the pivotal role of these submarines in safeguarding the country and supporting NATO’s security.

Visiting the Vanguard submarines is a rare occurrence for a Prime Minister, with Starmer being only the second PM to do so after David Cameron in 2013. The practice involves writing four sealed letters of last resort for the commanders, containing instructions for extreme circumstances like a nuclear strike wiping out the government.

Recent incidents, including thwarted Russian submarine surveillance activities and provocative actions near UK waters, have raised concerns about Moscow’s intentions. Starmer acknowledged the dual challenges of the Iran crisis and ongoing tensions with Russia, emphasizing the need for vigilance and unity among NATO allies.

Amid mounting pressure on defense spending, Starmer pledged to increase military investment to enhance readiness and address existing shortfalls. Recognizing the evolving security landscape, he advocated for closer collaboration within Europe and a stronger European role in NATO. Reaffirming a commitment to British national interests, Starmer asserted a cautious approach to the Iran conflict while ensuring defensive support for safe passage through key maritime routes.
