An employee of the NHS shared her experience of being verbally abused by a racist couple while in a park. Apple Moorhouse, a British citizen residing in the UK since 2009, was targeted by Fyona Bairstow, 72, and Michael Bairstow, 77, who told her to “go back to your dinghy.” The incident, captured in a viral video, left Apple feeling scared and unsettled.
The confrontation occurred in Manor Heath Park in Halifax, West Yorkshire, after Apple asked the Bairstows to leash their dog. The video showed the couple, married for three decades, directing a stream of abuse at the healthcare worker.
Speaking out against racism, Apple remarked on the impact of the incident, stating that it made her hesitant to return to her healthcare job, which was her passion. The Bairstows, who recorded the altercation, were sentenced to eight weeks in jail for racially/religiously aggravated common assault against Apple.
The court proceedings revealed that the incident took place on August 28, 2025, while Apple was in the park with her father and young daughter. Mr. Bairstow also faced a charge of assault by beating in relation to another woman who tried to intervene.
During sentencing, a magistrate expressed disgust at the couple’s behavior, emphasizing the lack of wisdom and kindness in their actions. The Bairstows expressed remorse for their actions, acknowledging their shame.
The court heard that the Bairstows’ unleashed dog had approached Apple’s child, prompting her to intervene. When she advised Mr. Bairstow to leash the dog, he responded aggressively, telling her to “go back to your dinghy” and making swimming gestures.
Overall, the incident highlighted the need to address and combat racism in society.
