A recent report by consumer group Which? revealed that the major mobile network providers, including EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. The report, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, highlighted that lesser-known networks offer better value and superior customer service.
The survey aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which ones are not. It found that the established “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of performance. Leading the rankings were Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY, with EE ranking highest among the big four providers at ninth place. O2 and Three were among the lowest-ranked networks.
Price emerged as a significant factor in the report, revealing that customers on the Big Four networks pay an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, while users on smaller networks pay only £9 on average. Despite the lower prices, the report emphasized that many smaller providers utilize the major networks’ infrastructure, offering comparable signal and service quality without the premium prices associated with well-known brands.
The report also highlighted the ease of switching mobile networks, with some customers able to switch providers in as little as 10 minutes. One member of Which? shared their experience of leaving O2 for a cheaper SMARTY plan, saving around £200 per year.
Natalie Hitchins, Which?’s Head of Home Products and Services, noted that smaller providers consistently outperform the major mobile firms by offering better customer service and more affordable deals. She encouraged customers to consider switching to providers that offer better value, especially those nearing the end of their contracts.
The rankings from Which? showed Talkmobile leading with 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile at 81%, Giffgaff and SMARTY at 79%, and Voxi at 79%. Notably, the traditional big four providers like EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three received lower scores in the rankings.
