Shabana Mahmood has struck a new agreement with France to prevent migrants from boarding small boats in Northern France. The Home Secretary made the announcement following last-minute negotiations just before the agreement was set to expire at midnight. Originally signed in 2023, the deal involves the UK funding French beach patrols to disrupt smuggling operations.

The Home Office disclosed that French law enforcement and intelligence operations will continue for an additional two months, costing £16.2 million. Approximately 700 officers dedicated to intercepting small boats will conduct round-the-clock patrols along the French coastline. Discussions are ongoing to enhance the agreement during this extension period.

Ms. Mahmood highlighted the success of collaboration with France, noting that their efforts have thwarted 42,000 illegal migrant attempts to cross the Channel. She emphasized the commitment to maintaining border control and restoring order. A Home Office spokesperson praised the Home Secretary’s efforts to secure a beneficial deal for the UK, aiming to prevent illegal crossings effectively.

In 2023, the previous Tory government announced a £478 million package to support a new detention center in France and deploy additional law enforcement personnel on French shores. The number of migrant crossings has surged in recent years, with 41,472 individuals arriving in the UK by small boat in 2025.

Xavier Ducept, France’s junior minister for the sea, criticized the UK for demanding funding conditions that could endanger asylum seekers’ lives. He stressed the importance of prioritizing rescue operations and upholding the law over efficiency concerns.
