European Sleeper, a Dutch-Belgian train operator, is set to introduce a new overnight train service linking major European cities. The upcoming route will run from Brussels, the Belgian capital, to Milan, the fashion hub of Italy, taking approximately 17 and a half hours.

The initial service will commence from Belgium, with plans to extend it to and from the Netherlands by 2027. The complete route will include stops in Cologne (Germany), Zurich (Switzerland), and Como (Italy).

Originally scheduled to launch in June, the night train to Milan has been postponed to start operating on September 9. Delays were attributed to track maintenance in Germany and the certification process for Switzerland, a new addition to the network.

The European Sleeper service from Brussels to Zurich and Milan will operate on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings, with return trips from Milan on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday nights. The train will travel via Zurich and the Gotthard Pass due to ongoing track works, bypassing the Simplon Pass as initially planned.

According to a company statement, the revised route via the Gotthard Pass offers new opportunities for travelers, including access to ski resorts in Göschenen and connections to scenic locales in Lugano and Como.

Tickets for the new route will go on sale starting March 17, 2026, offering various fare options such as budget, classic, comfort standard, and comfort plus. Prices begin at €29.99 (£25) for budget seats, €49.99 (£43) for a classic couchette bed, €99.99 (£85) for comfort standard, and €129.99 (£111) for comfort plus, which includes breakfast.

Despite the delayed launch, European Sleeper views the new connection as a significant milestone. The company also operates services between Brussels and Prague, with a forthcoming route from Paris to Berlin. Pricing for shared compartments starts at €69.99 (£60) for a one-way ticket.

Starting in 2027, Berlin-based startup Nox plans to offer affordable single-room accommodations as an alternative to short-haul flights, with rates beginning at €79 (£67).
