Novak Djokovic faced a close call for potential disqualification at the Australian Open when he narrowly missed hitting a ball kid in a fit of anger during his match against Botic van de Zandschulp. In a moment near the end of the second set, Djokovic impulsively struck a ball that almost hit a ball girl positioned by the net, avoiding contact by mere inches.

Had the ball made contact with the young girl, Djokovic would have faced disqualification, a consequence he experienced during the 2020 US Open for inadvertently hitting a line judge with a ball. Despite the tense situation, Djokovic quickly apologized and refocused on the match, ultimately securing victory in straight sets as he vies for his 11th Australian Open title.

Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash described the near-miss incident as a high-speed ball that narrowly missed the ball kid, emphasizing the potential severity of the situation if contact had been made. Djokovic himself acknowledged his luck in winning the match without dropping a set, attributing his success to strategic adjustments made during the game.

Looking ahead, Djokovic, aged 38, aims to claim his 25th Grand Slam title, a feat that would further solidify his place in tennis history. Reflecting on his current performance, Djokovic expressed satisfaction with his tournament start while remaining cautious about the challenges ahead, particularly emphasizing the competitive edge displayed by emerging talents like Alcaraz and Sinner.

As Djokovic continues his pursuit of success on the court, his experience and determination remain key assets in his quest for further achievements in the sport.
