A captain in the Royal Navy has stepped down from commanding a nuclear-armed submarine in light of an investigation into his relationship with a member of the Labour Party. The inquiry, conducted by the senior service, focused on allegations of an inappropriate relationship between the married officer and Joani Reid.

Subsequent to these initial findings, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) initiated additional security screenings following the arrest of David Taylor, the husband of Joani Reid, on suspicion of aiding China’s foreign intelligence service. The MOD concluded its investigations with the assurance that there was no breach of security, and the naval officer faced no disciplinary measures. Although the officer has relinquished his submarine duties, he remains within the Royal Navy without any violations of regulations.

Reportedly, the officer and Ms. Reid engaged in “flirtatious” communication, although a close associate of Ms. Reid refutes this claim. The pair first met during their youth, and Ms. Reid visited the Falsane base in January 2025 as part of a parliamentary scheme organized by the armed forces.

While the two individuals met in person and exchanged messages, there was no physical intimacy between them. A spokesperson for the Royal Navy emphasized the utmost priority placed on the security of the nuclear deterrent and refrained from commenting on individual cases.

David Taylor, who was arrested in connection to assisting China’s foreign intelligence service, has been released on bail and denies any involvement in unlawful activities. Meanwhile, Ms. Reid has voluntarily suspended herself from the Labour whip pending the conclusion of internal investigations.

Ms. Reid has not issued a response to requests for comments but previously stated that neither she nor her children are involved in her husband’s business activities or the ongoing investigation. She urged media organizations to respect her family’s privacy and clarified that she has no personal connections to China or discussions related to China in parliament.
