Former England cricketer Tony Pigott, known for his professional career with over 1,000 wickets, has passed away at 67. The ex-Sussex seam bowler, who battled oesophageal cancer, suffered a fatal heart attack. Pigott’s cricket legacy includes a notable appearance for England in 1984, when he delayed his wedding to play against New Zealand. Despite taking two wickets on debut, England lost, and Pigott never played for the national team again.

At the county level, Pigott spent significant time at Sussex and later moved to Surrey before returning to Sussex, eventually becoming the CEO after aiding in the club’s success, including their 2003 County Championship win. He was instrumental in introducing floodlights at Hove, earning him the nickname ‘Lester.’

Following Pigott’s death, tributes poured in, with former colleagues and players remembering him fondly. Sussex captain Chris Adams praised Pigott’s positive impact on the club and credited him for shaping his own career. Pigott’s influence extended beyond the field, with many expressing sorrow at his passing.
