The duration of awards for individuals applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be prolonged starting in April to address the backlog issue. PIP serves as the primary disability benefit for working-age individuals in the UK, offering assistance to those requiring extra support with daily activities due to health conditions or disabilities. Eligibility for PIP is determined by the impact of the condition on one’s life rather than the condition itself.

Effective from April 2026, changes will extend the minimum award period for most new PIP claimants aged 25 and above to three years initially, with a potential extension to five years upon subsequent review if eligibility persists. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) stated that this adjustment aims to enable health professionals to conduct more in-person assessments and reevaluations.

Distinct from the Timms Review, operational modifications will address the role of PIP, criteria for the daily living and mobility components, and the assessment process. PIP consists of two components: the daily living and mobility rates, with the standard and higher rates varying accordingly. It is vital to inform the DWP of any changes in health or conditions.

Terminally ill individuals typically receive automatic PIP approval without assessment. Under special rules for terminal illness, the award duration is three years before review. PIP is accessible for individuals aged over 16 but below state pension age, with claims continuing upon reaching state pension age in most cases. Individuals may reapply at state pension age if eligible for PIP in the past year.
