A recent analysis by Which? has once again crowned Aldi as the most budget-friendly supermarket for the month. The study compared prices for a list of 89 items in February, revealing that the average cost at Aldi was £161.56. Lidl followed closely behind at £162.75, just £1.19 more expensive. Asda ranked third at £181.06, with Tesco coming in fourth at £181.58 with a Clubcard.

The comparison list included a variety of branded and own-brand items like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter. Waitrose emerged as the priciest supermarket this month for a smaller selection of items, averaging £217.02, making it £55.46 more expensive than Aldi.

In a separate analysis of 225 items, Tesco was deemed the most cost-effective for Clubcard members, with the larger shopping bill totaling £580.35, undercutting Asda by £3.97. Without a Clubcard, Tesco’s bill was higher at £629.25, surpassing Aldi and Lidl, which were not part of this comparison due to their smaller product range.

Waitrose was once again the most expensive on average, with the larger shopping bill amounting to £650.11, a £69.76 difference compared to Tesco with a Clubcard. The analysis factored in special offer prices and loyalty discounts, excluding multibuy deals.

According to Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, Aldi’s affordability stands out this month, while Lidl remains a compelling option for budget-conscious shoppers. Tesco’s Clubcard provides value for those fond of branded products, but broader accessibility to these savings is hoped for in the near future. The analysis emphasizes that choosing where to shop wisely can lead to significant savings over the year.
