Legendary snooker commentator John Virgo has passed away at the age of 79. Known as the prominent voice of snooker, Virgo made his final appearance on the BBC during last month’s Masters tournament. Originally from Salford, he had a successful career as a player, winning the UK Championship in 1979. Virgo passed away in Spain, where he resided.

The sad news was confirmed by World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis on social media, expressing heartfelt condolences to Virgo’s family. The BBC also released a statement mourning the loss of the snooker icon. The World Snooker Tour expressed deep sadness over Virgo’s passing and extended condolences to his loved ones.

Renowned snooker figures like Ronnie O’Sullivan, Stephen Hendry, Shaun Murphy, and Neil Robertson paid tribute to Virgo, highlighting his significant contributions to the sport. Virgo, who retired from playing in 1994, became an iconic commentator and was inducted into the World Snooker Tour Hall of Fame. His famous catchphrase, “Where’s the cue ball going?” solidified his legendary status in the snooker world.

Aside from his commentary work, Virgo was known for presenting the BBC’s snooker program, Big Break, alongside Jim Davidson. Colleagues and friends remembered Virgo for his talent, humor, and dedication to snooker. Reflecting on his successful career, Virgo mentioned his positive working relationship with Davidson and the chemistry that made their collaboration successful.

In more recent years, Virgo and his wife relocated to Spain for a change of scenery. He openly discussed his past struggles with gambling addiction in an interview, leaving a lasting impact on the snooker community. Virgo is survived by his son, Gary, and daughter Brook-Leah, from previous marriages.
