Police are still working to identify a group of individuals who sexually assaulted a woman outside a church in a Surrey community. The victim, a woman in her twenties, was followed by a group of men after leaving the Labyrinth Epsom nightclub and subsequently attacked outside the Epsom Methodist Church on Ashley Road between 2 am and 4 am on Saturday, according to Surrey Police. The authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage and have conducted interviews with several witnesses, as well as carried out door-to-door inquiries.
Videos circulating on social media depicted crowds gathering in Epsom, while law enforcement officers in riot gear were present in the vicinity. Despite ongoing efforts, Surrey Police has not yet been able to provide descriptions of the suspects involved. The victim is receiving support from a specialized Sexual Offences Liaison Officer during the investigation process.
East Surrey Chief Superintendent Mark Chapman expressed understanding for the distress caused by the incident and assured the public that investigations are progressing. He emphasized the need to avoid speculating on the suspects’ descriptions to prevent further tension within the community. Increased police patrols have been implemented in the area and will be sustained over the weekend.
Member of Parliament Helen Maguire acknowledged the significant distress caused by the assault in Epsom, extending sympathy to the victim. Maguire urged the public to refrain from online speculation and allow Surrey Police to conduct a thorough investigation without hindrance. Authorities are specifically interested in speaking to individuals who were in the vicinity of Ashley Road, Epsom Methodist Church, or Labyrinth Epsom nightclub between 2 am and 4 am on the day of the incident, or who may have interacted with a distressed woman in her twenties. Anyone possessing CCTV, dashcam, or helmet cam footage from that timeframe is urged to step forward.
