A woman was caught on camera impulsively taking a live lobster from an upscale fish restaurant and tossing it into a harbor. The woman, believed to be an animal rights activist, mistakenly thought she was rescuing the lobster from being served as a meal, not realizing it was actually a pet lobster used for educational purposes at the restaurant.
The incident, captured on video, shows Emma Smart, 47, nonchalantly entering the Catch at the Old Fish Market in Dorset. She then proceeds to remove the lobster from a tank inside the restaurant. Despite attempts by restaurant staff to intervene, Smart drops the lobster into the water at a nearby harbor.
The lobster, owned by the restaurant’s proprietor for over two years, was intended for educational purposes and was not meant to be consumed. Unfortunately, the lobster’s fate remains unknown after the incident.
Following her actions, Smart, described as a marine biologist with a deep concern for animal welfare, faced legal consequences. She pleaded guilty to causing damage to the lobster and received a conditional discharge for eight months. Additionally, she was prohibited from approaching the restaurant within a 10-meter radius and interacting with its staff or patrons for the next three years.
The restaurant, known for its Michelin Guide status and famous guests like Sir David Attenborough, expressed disappointment over the incident. The court highlighted that the lobster was not meant for consumption but for educational purposes, emphasizing the misguided nature of Smart’s actions.
This was not Smart’s first encounter with the law at the same restaurant. In a previous incident, she disrupted a gathering involving Sir David Attenborough and was subsequently removed by authorities. Despite her activism, Smart’s actions have led to legal repercussions and public scrutiny.
