JD.com, a prominent Chinese e-commerce giant, has introduced its new platform, Joybuy, in the UK to compete with major players like Amazon. With a focus on technology, appliances, beauty, home goods, groceries, and other essentials, the £30 billion company features popular brands such as Apple, LEGO, Samsung, and L’Oréal.
Joybuy is set to provide next-day delivery for orders exceeding £29 in London and several other cities like Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, and Cambridge, serving around 17 million residents. Additionally, a same-day “Double 11” delivery service guarantees orders placed by 11 am will reach customers by 11 pm. JD.com has established its own logistics network, with distribution centers in Milton Keynes and Luton.
The expansion into the UK market follows JD.com’s withdrawal from negotiations to acquire major British retail brands in recent years. The company considered purchasing Currys in 2024 and explored a potential takeover of Argos from Sainsbury’s last September but ultimately stepped back from these deals.
Emphasizing its commitment to the UK market, JD.com aims to attract new customers with its diverse product range, competitive pricing, and convenient services. Matthew Nobbs, the managing director of Joybuy UK, expressed confidence in the company’s growth prospects, highlighting their dedication to enhancing the customer experience through continuous refinement of their web and app platforms.
JD.com is also launching its operations in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Notably, the company secured a significant 2.2 billion euro (£1.9 billion) acquisition deal for Ceconomy, a Germany-based electronics retail group, last year.
